A. COURSE DESCRIPTION

In all band classes, students are provided with a broad range of opportunities to participate in learning to play a woodwind, brass, or all the members of the percussion family of instruments. These experiences provide students with a positive outlet for performing with peers as well as alone. Students will also learn to express themselves by creating music and evaluating the music of others as a means of gaining the understanding the importance of music in our world. Band activities provide students with confidence as they take steps toward independence and a lifelong appreciation of music.

B. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION

Students will learn in a group setting how to play an instrument, read music, compose, improvise, and evaluate musical performances.

Course Grading

Classwork/Participation prepares students for Written Quizzes. Written Quizzes give students a good idea of what they know and do not know a week before a test. Playing Tests and Written Tests are comprehensive, covering classwork, and quiz materials

How Grades Are Calculated

Weekly Participation is worth 100 points per week, and is based on active participation in class, coming to class prepared, and responses to daily bellringers.

Notebook/binder checks are worth 50 points, 2-3 per grading period. Notebook/binder checks are to make sure students have been keeping up with their notes as well as music that we are working on in class for performances.

Quizzes are worth 50 points, 2-3 quizzes per grading period. Quizzes are a snapshot of what a student knows, and are not eligible for retakes.

Tests are worth 100 points, 2-3 tests per grading period. Students have 5 days to complete a test. Students may retake each day until a satisfactory grade is achieved. Grading is based on performance mastery.

Binder checks are worth 50 points, 2 per grading period.

School performances are worth 100 points each, 1 per semester.

Projects are worth 200 points, 1 per semester.

Concerts are worth 200 points each, 1 per semester.

Bandroom Procedures

  • As you enter the bandroom, get your instrument, 3-ring binder, music and/or book, pencil, and any other materials needed for rehearsal.
  • Put your books and materials for other classes in the assigned area.
  • Sit in your seat, put the materials you need for that day on your stand in the proper order (see board), and have your instrument ready to play.
  • Have yourself and your instrument prepared to rehearse on time.
  • When rehearsal is over, pack up your materials, make sure your chair and stand are straight and your area clean, put your instrument away and get your other possessions, and quietly leave when dismissed.

*Do not pack up until told to do so.*
